The adidas success story began in the laundry room of the mother of brothers Adolf and Rudolf Dassler in Herzogenaurach.  They had been making sports shoes there since the early 1920s. In the mid-1930s, the Dassler brothers produced special shoes for different sports, including tennis shoes from 1931. Adidas AG was founded by Adolf Dassler in August 1949. The company founder also patented the shoe model with the three parallel stripes as a trademark. The company name is made up of Dassler's nickname "Adi" and the first three letters of his surname.

In the 1960s, adidas also established itself in the world of tennis with its clever and innovative products. In 1965, a special tennis shoe was made of leather - before that, mainly textile and canvas shoes were common in tennis. The adidas trademark has been three parallel stripes on adidas products since the early years. The "brand with the three stripes" has had many celebrity brand ambassadors from the sports and lifestyle sectors over the past decades These include tennis icon Stan Smith and former professional footballer David Beckham.
