The success story of adidas began in the laundry room of the mother of brothers Adolf and Rudolf Dassler in Herzogenaurach.  They had been making sports shoes there since the early 1920s. In the mid-1930s, the Dassler brothers began manufacturing special shoes for different sports, including tennis shoes from 1931 onwards. adidas AG was founded in August 1949 by Adolf Dassler. The company founder also patented the shoe model with the three parallel stripes as a trademark. The company name is composed of Dassler's nickname "Adi" and the first three letters of his surname.

In the 1960s, adidas also established itself in the world of tennis with its clever and innovative products. In 1965, a special leather tennis shoe was created – before that, textile and canvas shoes were the norm in tennis. Since its early years, the adidas trademark has been three parallel stripes that can be seen on adidas products. Over the past decades, the "brand with the three stripes" has had many prominent brand ambassadors from the worlds of sport and lifestyle. These include tennis icon Stan Smith and former professional soccer player David Beckham.
